Muted Messiah

Imagine for a moment that your task is to stop the spread of Christianity; You are an anti-evangelist. How would you do it? How would you counteract a movement with such potential and momentum when God himself is behind it?

If you’re smart you would just imitate Satan...

In the garden, Satan showed us the most effective way to fight against God. It’s simple, powerful, and doesn’t require much skill—just call into question the words that God spoke. That’s it. Make people question that God spoke at all. Make people question the truth of what God said. Obscure his words in any way and human nature will gladly do the rest. Here is what the serpent said to Eve: “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” We know how this story ends.

This tactic is equivalent to poisoning the well. If you want to kill a village then taint their water supply, don’t take on the laborious task of individually murdering people, one by one. Likewise, if you want to stop the people of God then confuse them at the source, concerning the very words of God, and you won’t have to involve yourself in the intense work of individually converting people to an alternative belief system. Malign God’s words and true Christianity will cease because the version that spreads will be based on half-truths and lies. That’s how you stop the spread of Christianity.

Unfortunately, this is more than a perverted thought experiment. Christians are currently poisoning their own well, and they don’t even know it...
